Budget discipline remains front of mind across most organisations. In this climate, hiring decisions are measured, deliberate and closely scrutinised. With fewer large-scale transformation programs and less volume recruitment, each appointment carries greater weight. Managers are seeking candidates who not only meet technical requirements, but who can operate with flexibility and contribute beyond a narrowly defined remit.
This level of selectivity demands time and focus.
Interestingly, however, tighter hiring conditions often coincide with an increase in direct advertising. On the surface, advertising appears cost-effective. In practice, it frequently shifts the workload internally with hiring managers and talent teams spending significant hours reviewing applications that do not meet core criteria.
Recent SEEK data highlights one of the most overlooked inefficiencies: location misalignment.
For Sydney based roles:
- 62.7% of applicants are local
- 37.3% apply from outside Sydney
For Brisbane based roles:
- 43.8% of applicants are local
- 56.2% apply from outside Brisbane
In Brisbane, the majority of applicants are not even located in the state.
High response volumes can create the impression of a strong talent pool. In reality, a substantial proportion of applications require immediate filtering due to geographic constraints alone before skills, experience or cultural alignment are even assessed.
The hidden cost is not advertising spend. It is internal time:
- Screening non-viable candidates
- Delayed shortlisting
- Slower decision making
- Opportunity cost of leadership focus diverted to inbox management
In an environment where return on investment is under constant scrutiny, it is worth considering where effort is best allocated, reviewing hundreds of applications in the hope of identifying a suitable candidate, or evaluating a pre-qualified shortlist aligned to role, capability and location from the outset.
Efficiency in hiring is no longer a luxury. It is a commercial necessity.
