Talking Salary: How to Approach the Conversation with Confidence

salary
When applying for a permanent role, it’s almost inevitable you’ll be asked two questions early on: What are you currently earning? and What are your salary expectations?

We see every response, from open and transparent to hesitant or defensive. The reality is this conversation is unavoidable, and how you approach it can materially influence the opportunities you’re considered for.

The key is preparation.

Know your current package.

Before entering any salary discussion, be clear on your existing remuneration:

  • What is your base salary?
  • Do you receive a bonus? If so, what is it based on and what does it typically equate to financially?

Understanding your full package allows for a more accurate and constructive conversation.

Be clear on what you’re seeking

Consider the base salary you’re targeting in your next role and whether the increase is reasonable. Ask yourself:

  • Does this reflect your experience and capability?
  • Is the role a step up in scope, responsibility or complexity?

Salary expectations grounded in role scope and market reality are far more compelling than “I’m moving jobs, so I want more money.”

Be able to articulate the ‘why’

Hiring managers respond to rationale. Being able to explain why you’re seeking an increase – expanded scope, greater responsibility, specialist skills or market alignment demonstrates maturity and self-awareness.

Know your bottom line

This is where many candidates unintentionally do themselves a disservice. Aiming unrealistically high and then having to walk it back can weaken your position. Knowing your genuine minimum allows your recruiter to guide you toward roles that genuinely align, not to negotiate against you but rather to broaden the opportunities you may consider.

Prepare before emotions take over

Job searching can be emotional. Preparing for salary conversations in advance helps ensure your responses are confident, consistent and considered – not reactive.

A transparent, well-prepared discussion enables your recruiter to partner with you effectively and position you strongly in the market.
