The Spotlight Series – Infrastructure Technology
Welcome back to the Spotlight Series, where every month we will be shining a light on high demand roles and technologies in the IT sector.
The roles that we will feature will be based on jobs that are in high demand and using increasingly popular technologies.
This month we look at Infrastructure Technology.
So, what is Infrastructure Technology?
Infrastructure Technology comprises the components required to operate and manage enterprise IT environments. Infrastructure Technology can be deployed within a cloud computing system, or within an organisation’s own facilities.
These components include hardware, software, networking components, operating systems (OS), and data storage, all of which are used to deliver IT services and solutions. Infrastructure Technology products are available as downloadable software applications that run on top of existing IT resources—like software-defined storage—or as online solutions offered by service providers—like Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS).
What does an Infrastructure Technology job look like?
The roles of Infrastructure Technology Engineers include being responsible for designing, building, deploying, and maintaining the IT infrastructure using the latest technology. For example, an IT infrastructure engineer ensures all the IT systems that support businesses of any size function efficiently.
How do you develop a career in Infrastructure Technology?
Employers look for a candidate with a bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering or a related discipline. Moreover, you should have experience in designing, deploying and maintaining networks and systems, typically physical components (computer and networking hardware and facilities), but also various software and network components.
How has COVID impacted the industry?
Throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, companies have learned to accelerate digital transformations and rethink operations to survive and thrive in a new normal, the biggest change being the need for improved Cybersecurity. The pandemic created new challenges for businesses as they adapted to an operating model in which working from home has become more commonplace. The reputational, operational, legal and compliance implications could be considerable if cybersecurity risks are neglected.
Cybersecurity can be categorized into five distinct types:
- Critical infrastructure security.
- Application security.
- Network security.
- Cloud security.
- Internet of Things (IoT) security.
What’s trending?
As 2022 begins, leaders across the technology industry are looking for new ways to drive business results while staying ahead of evolving customer needs.
The trends in Infrastructure Technology are:
Data Fabric: Data fabric is a design concept that acts as an integrated layer (fabric) of data and connecting processes. It uses analytics over existing metadata assets to support the design, deployment and utilisation of integrated and reusable data across all environments.
Cybersecurity Mesh: Cybersecurity mesh allows for modern day, stand-alone security solutions to work cohesively to improve security overall by shifting control points closer to the assets they’re protecting. To better secure environments, cybersecurity mesh can rapidly verify identity, context and policy adherences across cloud and noncloud environments.
Cloud-Native Platforms: Cloud-native platforms allow IT leaders to build new applications that are long withstanding and flexible. Cloud adoption has been on the rise since the start of the pandemic, cloud deployments are likely to quickly surpass private data centre workloads.
Composable Applications: Composable applications are built from modular components that centre around the business environment. They make it simple to use and reuse code, rapidly increasing the time it takes to go to market with new software solutions.
Decision Intelligence: Decision intelligence is the most practical approach to improve organisational decision making. Effective decision making in modern-day, challenging business environments is critical and requires clearly defined processes. Intelligence and analytics are used to inform, educate and refine decisions, driving new core competencies.
Inspired?
2022 has kicked off with a bang – the industry is booming and the opportunity for experienced Infrastructure Technology professionals will only continue.
